Project Overview
The Challenge
AEX Media Amsterdam approached ALEXXDESIGN with a bold vision:
- to create a groundbreaking News website that would not only deliver news but also engage readers in a way that encouraged daily visits and active participation.
The challenge was to balance sleek design with usability, readability, and interactivity, ensuring the website stood out in a competitive digital landscape. ALEXXDESIGN accepted the challange.
The Result: The website was awarded as the Best News website in the Netherlands.
Key challenges included:
- Designing for readability: - News websites often struggle with cluttered layouts. We needed a clean, intuitive design that prioritized content.
- Encouraging daily visits: - The website had to offer a compelling reason for users to return daily.
- Flexibility: - Make the website modular, so it can be easily expanded based on user feedback and changing market needs.
- Fostering user engagement: - Readers needed to feel empowered to participate in discussions and share their opinions.
- Technical constraints: - Use web technologies familiar to back-end developers and create an early, modular front-end system.
01. Design Process
The design process began with concept development, where we envisioned a website that transcended being merely a news portal to become a vibrant community hub. The core concept centered around three fundamental pillars.
· First, readability was paramount; we adopted a clean, minimalist design emphasizing typography and ample whitespace to ensure a comfortable reading experience.
· Second, engagement played a crucial role, leading us to incorporate features that foster user interaction, such as comment sections and easy news sharing options.
· Lastly, we aimed to cultivate a daily habit among users by designing a dynamic homepage that consistently featured fresh content and personalized recommendations, encouraging visitors to return regularly and stay connected with the community.
02. Information Architecture
The website's information architecture was thoughtfully designed for intuitive navigation, prioritizing breaking news and featured stories on the homepage.
Content was organized into clear categories like Politics, Business, and Culture, making browsing easy. A strong search function further enhanced quick access to specific topics.
03. Interaction Design
Key interactions were designed to enhance usability:
- Commenting System: Allowed users to share opinions and engage in discussions.
- News Sharing: Integrated social sharing buttons to encourage content dissemination.
- Personalization: Enabled users to customize their news feed based on interests.
04. Visual Design
The design focused on simplicity and elegance, ensuring a user-friendly experience. Legible, adjustable typography enhanced readability across devices. A neutral color palette with bold accents highlighted headlines and calls-to-action. High-quality images complemented news stories, boosting visual interest and engagement.
05. Front-End Development
We leveraged cutting-edge front-end services and products to ensure a seamless user experience, easy integration and maintenance for the back-end, optimized performance for fast download times, usability, and accessibility.

Results & Impact
- Award-Winning Design: Recognized as the Best news website of 2007.
- User Engagement: High levels of reader interaction, with thousands of comments and shares daily.
- Daily Visits: Achieved the goal of encouraging readers to return daily.
- Personalization: Allowed users to customize their news feed based on interests.
- Longevity: The website remained successful until 2011, demonstrating the durability of its design and functionality.
Conclusion
The DePers news website was a groundbreaking project that set a new standard for digital news platforms. By combining sleek design, ALEXXDESIGN enhanced usability, and user engagement features, and we created a website that not only won awards but also fostered a loyal community of readers.
Though the website eventually transitioned later into 'Ondernemer', its legacy lives on as a testament to the power of thoughtful UX design.
